The Pantheon wasn’t always a building devoted to the heroes of the French Republic. Before it became what it is now, it used to be the Church of Sainte Geneviève. During the French Revolution, it became what we know today, a tribute to 73 French men and women. Félx Éboué was the first one to be buried in this scared sanctuary. Later incorporated were Marie Curie, Alexander Dumas, André Maulraux, Victor Hugo, Émile Zola. Not to forget are the famous philosophers, Voltaire and Jean-Jacques Rousseau. Seeing that the church was being criticized by the people, because of its working together with monarchy. Attacking the church for their discriminating acts toward them. Not being surprised at all by all the criticism that was going on, but it was really disappointing that the church acted that way towards the people. When the church should be setting the good example to the people. Leading the people in France to not trust the church and not having faith in religion, instead turning their faith to science and philosophers. The purpose of this Pantheon is to play tribute to those heroes of the French Republic. The Pantheon stands as a testimony of the dispute between the republicans and the church. When republicans attacked the monarchy, they simultaneously served the power of the Catholic Church, and the Pantheon serves as a reminder of this history. Also being the first monument not dedicated to the monarchy. Honor the people that supported the idea of change. People who helped France become what they are now a independent republic. I believe is a honor to have this monument as a reminder of the rise of science, technology and individualism.
